TMJ Surgery: Whether you are scheduled for this procedure, advised to have this procedure, or just wondering about it, my answer would be the same. First explore all other conservative treatment options with a dentist who has extensive experience and training in treating patients with tmd. Then ask him\her your specific questions.

Be conservative: The majority of pain symptoms related with TMJ disorder can be alleviated with non-surgical, conservative treatment approaches. Surgery should be reserved for severe trauma cases (car accidents) where fractures are involved. Tmj therapy (in most cases) also does not involve extensive reconstructions or orthodontics. Be sure you're comfortable with the suggested options before proceeding.

Depends: Depends on the type of surgery: arthrocentesis, arthroscopy, arthroplasty, total joint replacement. I'd need to know the type of surgery planned.
