It depends: Pain medication in general is given to help control a variety of pain types. Not all pain medication is narcotic. Specifically narcotics are indicated for severe pain before, during and after surgery and for cancer pain. The use of narcotics beyond that is a decision your doctor will need to make. Other types of pain medication include non steroidal anti inflammatory and mood stabilizers.
