Needs to be seen: A number of things. The important thing is to know what it is and not what it could be. I suggest that you have him\her seen by a pediatrician or pedodontist asap for an accurate diagnosis.

Salivary gland issue: Occasional there can be a stone formation, or a small infection on a gland. Depending on the location- aphthous ulcers can create a painful situation for a couple of days too. Warm rinses should help expedite the recovery time.

Salivary gland?: There can be fluid formed lesions that are formed by the minor salivary glands on palate. Cannot diagnose without direct exam and should be looked at by medical professional.
