Get examined: Pain in the back of the heel towards the back of the leg is where achilles tendonitis occurs, but are you sure that's what you are dealing with? Get examined properly. Xrays can infer position of soft tissue but mainly highlight bone. To examine the achilles, an MRI would be warranted to check for damage - even a longitudinal tear which can be very subtle but result in lingering pain.

Rest it if it hurts: If your achilles tendon hurts after an exercise or similar activity, find out if there is swelling and/or a bruise at the site of pain; and whether you can rise on the heel on that side. If swelling and bruise are also present, follow the rice regimen, then find a foot specialist in your area to make an appointment.A thompson test and feeling for a dell at site of pain would indicate tendo rupture.
