The classic teaching is to use your cane in the hand opposite your painful hip or leg. Thus when walking you put your bad leg and the cane forward to share the weight and then advance your good leg. However some people find in easier to use the hand on the same side as the bad leg putting the bad leg and the cane forward together. Try them both and see which method works for you.
