Purpora?: Was there trauma to the area or do you have vascular disease? If the area turning black, there could be a number of reasons, is there a smell or odor? Is there any wound? This may be serious because of the color.

Blood or gangrene: If the toenails are black, you may have old blood under the nail or fungus in the toenail. If the skin of the toe is black you may have gangrene which is when there is no circulation to the toe. In the latter case, gangrene, you need to see a podiatrist immediately or go to the emergency room to have your circulation checked!
