Amenorrhea: Having a period only once a year is amenorrhea (essential absence of menses), in your case of the secondary type. If you are below the age of menopause, particularly if you have any interest in getting pregnant, you should see a doctor. If you are 5 years after menopause, then any bleeding episode should be evaluated by your physician to rule out endometrial cancer.
