Maybe forever?: Sometimes a fixed retainer behind your lower anterior teeth is attached to prevent the teeth from shifting. Anterior teeth have narrow roots like ice cream cones and can easily shift. Many times the lingual retainer can be removed and replaced with a thin, clear appliance that you wear nightly. It also depends on the severity of the original problem that you started with. Ask your dentist for help.

Fixed retainer: Must be left in place for as long as you want your teeth to remain straight. Have your Dentist or the Orthodontist that made the retainer inspect it's integrity on a yearly basis. Make sure you are flossing. If anything seems even the least little bit loose/bent/incorrect, return to Orthodontist immediately.
