Rabies infection: The cdc states: all species of mammals are susceptible to rabies virus infection, but only a few are reservoirs for the disease. Distinct strains of rabies have been identified in raccoons, skunks, foxes, coyotes and several species of insectivorous bats. Transmission of rabies begins when infected host saliva is passed to an uninfected animal through a bite or mucous membranes, eyes, or mouth.
