Keep food diary: Keep a diary of each food you eat and a record of when your hives flare. Using this information, you can sometimes pinpoint a pattern associated with the hives. Allergy tests cannot test for all possible allergens. If the hives get worse with stress or hot showers or exercise, it may represent cholinergic urticaria. Taking an oral antihistamine such as Claritin (loratadine) or alllegra as needed may be helpful.

Determine cause: Hives are caused by the release of a substance called histamine, which causes the characteristic "wheal and flare" skin reaction. Allergy tests are almost always negative, in my experience. If long-acting antihistamines have not worked, your hives may be due to an internal trigger, and your doctor will need to run some tests to find it.
