A member asked:

Can celiac disease cause chronic severe constipation instead of diarrhea?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Unlikely: Celiac disease is secondary to damage to the lining of small intestine. Classic symptoms are diarrhea and weight loss. A small percent of patient may have constipation but not severe. Common causes of severe constipation are meds induced, diet related, not drinking enough fluids, and metabolic changes. Colonic inertia is another cause which requires a detailed workup. Hope this helps.
