Kind of: Most acl tears are complete or grade 3 tears. It is rare that an acl tear is a partial tear or a grade 2 injury. A MRI is really not the best way to tell a partial (grade 2) tear from a complete tear; regardless of what the MRI report says. A physical exam with testing of the ligament is the best determinant. In general, an acl tear in a complete tear 95% of the time. Partial tears are rare.

Yes.: It is possible to have a partial tear, or sprain of the ACL, but those are pretty rare. Generally, well over 90 percent of all ACL injuries are complete tears.
