Depends: A broken blood vessel on the surface of the eye causes a subconjunctival hemorrhage, an ugly but harmless lesion. They can occur spontaneously, by rubbing your eye or even a cough or sneeze.

Usually nothing bad: 99+% of the time this just happens spontaneously and we never know why. High blood pressure can be a cause, though. Get your blood pressure checked. If this happens repeatedly you should see your doc.
