It contributes: Any darkly or brightly colored foods can contribute to teeth stain. If it will stain a white t-shirt it'll stain your teeth. That being said, most teeth are naturally yellowish to some degree--this is because the internal substance of the teeth is yellow-orange. Obviously there is a lot of variation among people. Chocolate and other stsining foods simply contribute to the exterior stain.
