History and exam: Are the most important tools we have when assessing patients. Abdominal distention also has other causes that will need to be evaluated carefully. Ibs is usually a diagnosis of exclusion. Therefore, if you have these symptoms for the first time please see your gp and/or a gastroenterologist if needed to arrive at correct diagnosis. Best wishes.
