A common cold: Sounds like a typical common cold. It usually lasts about 5-7 days. Try increased fluid intake and rest as much as you can. If the symptoms last more than 1-2 week, or if your symptoms are so severe that your ability to function is compromised, you may consider calling in sick and go see your doctor.

High fever: If you have a high fever, tender or swollen neck, can't keep fluids down, have pus on your tonsils, or don't start feeling better after 5-7 days, then you should see a doctor.
