Depends on the cause: Snoring is a significant problem for many people, & often goes undiagnosed or gets passed off as an irritation. A great place to start is an examination by an ear, nose, & throat doctor and a sleep study. Sleep apnea, a serious and potentially life threatening condition, should be ruled out or diagnosed through a sleep a study. Based on findings, options will be presented. Good luck.

Snoring remedies: If you are overweight, losing weight not only reduces pressure on the airways, the tongue shrinks in size, further opening the airway. Don't sleep on your back ( sew a pocket in a t-shirt and put a tennis ball in it ). See an ENT to make sure that there isn't a problem with deviated septum, tonsils or adenoids. Use breathe rite strips. See a dentist to have a custom sleep device made.

A few weeks ago my husband started snoring all the time. Is there anything we can do about it?

Yes: It's possible that he has nasal congestion at night forcing him to be a mouth breather when he sleeps. This can lead to snoring. The nasal congestion can be due to allergies or a recent cold. Have your husband try otc decongestant nasal sprays and/or breathe right strips for several nights. If this doesn't work or he has pauses in his breathing, you should see an ent.

Stop Snoring: Multiple factors contribute to snoring. These can include anatomic issues such as a deviated septum, long or low lying palate, a small jaw, a large tongue, a short, thick neck as well as carrying extra weight in the abdomen. Once sleep apnea is ruled out, things like breathe right strips, weight loss and oral appliances can be tried. Septal deviation and palate issues can be surgically corrected.

Narrowed airway: Snoring happens as muscles relax during sleep and air flows through a floppier smaller airway . If snoring is chronic it may be a sign of sleep apnea (osa) that is associated with daytime sleepiness cardiovascular disease , diabetes and headaches for example.

4 main reasons: There are 4 predisposing factors for snoring: 1) being human 2) being male 3) overweight 4) nasal congestion apparently, there is nothing to be done about 1 and 2, so you need to concentrate on 3 and 4. You also need to consider the possibility that you are not dealing with simple snoring but snoring as a symptom of sleep apnea. Overall, snoring is not a laughing matter. I would take it seriously.

Get him to a doctor who knows how to diagnose and treat sleep apnea. Snoring is merely annoying, but obstructive sleep apnea kills people.

Nasal congestion: Nasal congestion is the usual culprit: it forces you into mouth breathing and snoring. A primary care physician can usually help you take good care of your nose.
