How can i tell if i have an inner ear problem?

Maybe: I need more symptoms and need to do a physical exam in order to determine this. Are you nauseated? Do you have the sensation that the room is spinning? Is your gait altered? Do you get the 'room spinning' sensation when you turn your head upon waking up? If so, you very well could have an inner ear problem. See your doctor.

Tests: If the problem is hearing, we order a hearing test. If the problem is balance, there is an array of vestibular testing that we can order (vng or eng). These test can test if your balance disorder is due to your vestibular system or is it related to something else related to your brain. Also it can tell is which side you are the problem is on.

How does amoxicillin help inner ear problem?

It probably won't: Amoxicillin is an antibiotic, useful for bacterial infections. It is not prescribed usually for inner ear problems. It would be appropriate for a middle ear infection, an acute otitis media. This is what most people mean when they say "ear infection." see you local ENT if your problem does not resolve. Best wishes.

Flight: It is not unsafe to fly, but the changes in pressures during a flight may exacerbate your underlying problem -- check with your doctor before your flight.

Are steroids effective in inner ear problems?

Yes: They are an absolute necessity for sudden sensorineural hearing loss. They are taken by mouth and injected through ear drum.
They can also be very useful for temporary or acute flair ups of labrynthitis and meniere's disease. There is evidence that suggests injection of steroids trough the ear drum, decreases the chance of developing hearing loss with meniere's disease.
