Hyperthyroidism: Hyperthyroidism is probably the most common cause of a bulging appearance of the eye. In this condition, the orbital contents can swell which can literally push the eye outward. Also, the lids can retract back giving a wide open appearance which accentuates the bulging. Some people have shallow orbits which makes the eye seem bulge but they are really not. Proptosis is the medical term for bulging.
