Any activity: Any activity which stresses your back may cause lumbar sprain. Exercise, stay thin and in good shape. Exercise in a swimming pool is excellent. If something you do causes back pain don't do it.

Depends: Lumbar strain can come from over-use of the lower back, poor lifting habits, weight gain, etc. The best way to address lumbar strain is 2 days of ice, followed by stretching/ warmth thereafter. No lifting or contact activity for 2-4 weeks to allow healing.. After the severe pain settled down (1 month or so), then start core strengthening exercises. See you md /pt for exam before proceeding.
