Yes: We need to clarify why there is swelling. We usually have to remove the fluid to clarify what is causing the collection of the fluid. Your evaluation will need an examination, imaging, laboratory studies. Fluid in the knee is usually due to arthritis but there are many types of arthritis that can cause this fluid and that is why you need an evaluation.

To be sure, a rheumatologist or an orthopedic surgeon can determine the likely cause, and how to address the treatment of it, if any.
