How common is it for someone to need a holter monitor?

Holter monitor: It depends on the patient's symptoms and the frequency that they occur. Holter monitors are useful for picking up arrhythmias that occur on a frequent, usually daily basis since the monitor is in place for 24-48 hours. Arrhythmias that occur less frequently are better detected with a 30 day ambulatory event monitor.
