Allergy: Persistent cough with itching is usually due congestion of the back of throat. Allergic reaction to inhaled allergen is the usual cause. Weather change and irritants such as tobacco smoke can also cause the same symptoms. Over the counter antihistamine such as Claritin (loratadine) and decongestants such as sudafed could be useful.
