A member asked:

Do a lot of people get cytomegalovirus infection?

5 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

No: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection generally requires exposure in a person with a depressed immune system. The two groups most likely to get it are cancer patients during the supressed immune system part of their treatment and aids patients. And few of either of these groups actually get it. These are watched for carefully by treating doctors in these two categories.

50-80%: More than half the people have been infected with CMV and carry the virus in their white blood cells. Some people experience a mono like illness at initial infection. Among adults, usually only immunosuppressed people get the disease due to infection. Primary infection in the mother, while pregnant, can have devastating consequences for the fetus.
