A number of things: Tests for HPV DNA are being done on routine pap smears more and more often and are beginning to replace cytology (looking at cells). If you are asking about when the patient already has cancer, the tumor itself can be tested for the presence of HPV by many methods. An antibody called "p16" is commonly used as well as a method called "in-situ hybridization."
