Gene research: Because of the rapid reproductive rate of flies they are a good model to study different gene mutations in. You can select a population of flies with a specific mutation. Which might represent a cancer cell line or a mutation that leads to the development of cancer cells. You can then try out many different therapies or research different mechanisms of treatment directed at the mutation.

No longer in use: Some of the old techniques of chromosomal banding were done on fruit flies because of their distinctive biology. This laid the foundation for science that is now almost entirely based on cell cultures and recombinant DNA work. We can be thankful for the animals that helped us, even the humble insects.
