Category C drug: Caffeine is considered moderately safe during pregnancy from studies to date. Around the time of delivery it is good to avoid as a newborn may show excessive irritability, tremor and feed poorly. Newborns can take days for the caffeine to leave their system.Kids can usually handle the caffeine more like an adult but may be more prone to heartburn.

Pregnant? No Caffeine: As little as 2 cups of coffee a day (200 mg caffeine) risks harming a fetus (low birth weight, preterm birth, birth defects). Caffeine is a stimulant & raises blood pressure, heart rate, urine output (can cause dehydration), and disrupts sleep in mom and baby. It is also found in tea, chocolate, soda, and in some medicines (otc headache and menstrual cramp relievers). Limit to 1 cup of coffee/day.

One a day: For pregnant women it's recommended to limit consumption of caffeinated beverages to one a day. Young children should not drink caffeinated beverages.
