Starting OCPs: Most women start ocp's with their cycle on day one; a few start the following sunday. Day one starts are effective the same cycle. In your case, you started late and your pills are not effective yet. They will be effective next cycle.

About 1 month: There are 2 recommended methods of starting oral contraceptive pills. The most common is the 'sunday start' the week of the onset of menstruation. The pill is not fully affective for one month using this method. The other is the 'same day start' where you take the first pill the day menstruation begins. The pill is effective immediately using this method.
