Slowly: If you have a third nerve palsy (poor eye motion, pupillary disturbance, lid droop) then the cause should be analyzed by a neuro-ophthalmologist. The speed of recovery depends upon the cause (diabetes, trauma, tumors, vascular anomalies, infection) and many cannot recover.
