Heart failure: Mitral valve prolapse can cause severe mitral valve regurgitation which can weaken the heart, cause severe shortness of breath and heart failure. Surgery remains the best option in the hands of good surgeons who can repair the valve. Valve replacement carries a higher risk of mortality and complications than valve repair. It can be performed minimally invasively without opening the chest bone.
