Menstrual symptoms: After 35, the hormones produced in a cycle are much higher, b/c the ovary requires more stimulation to produce an egg. Estrogen levels drop precipitously just before your menses, and if the amount in your system is higher now, the drop may produce cramping and water retention in advance of your actual bleeding. If concerned, get a serum HCG test to make sure you are not pregnant.
