Anti-inflammatory : Usually after an ankle sprain, the best and most conservative modality to use is ice. It reduces swelling, and prevents stiffness. If swelling continues after icing, then an anti-inflammatory medication can be used. Apirin, ibubrofen, Naproxen is over-the counter. Make sure you take it with meals. Pay attention to the warnings on the label, and take the minimal dosage in the beginning.

Sprained ankle: For sprained ankles, resting is important but probably the hardest to do, icing around the area, compression with comfortable ace-bandage, and elevation. Taking antiinflammatory medication (advil, ibuprofen, motrin, etc) can be helpful the first few weeks after to help decrease pain and swelling. Also, getting over counter ankle bracing may help for more moderate sprains.
