Herniated lumbar disc. is the type of pain an indication of severity of nerve entrapment? i.e. stabbing vs dull pain.

I don't think so: It's the intensity and the nerve damage by sciatic symptoms and possibly by nerve conduction and EMG results.

Herniated disc: The simple answer is no. The degree of neurologic deficit is related to the amount of inflammation the disc is causing the nerve. Small herniations can cause severe symptoms while large ones can be a symptomatic. Usual symptoms are pain, numbness, or weakness.
