Clots = heavier flow: Large clots are associated with heavier menstrual flow. This is, of course, assuming you are not pregnant or miscarrying. Clots may occur with fibroids; i've seen large clots with endocervical polyps - though rarely. And it isn't uncommon for women to have heavier flow as they approach menopause. Ask your doctor about the Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud, or endometrial ablation if no more children are desired.
