Battery acid, from the explosion of lead-acid automotive batteries, can be vision threatening. Irrigation of severe burns is continued in the ambulance and in the emergency room until the ph of the conjunctiva is normalized. Particles may be entrapped under the upper lid. Ophthalmic consultation is critical.
