Viral.: Several viruses can cause such an eruption. The most common is called "hand-foot-mouth", which is more common in kids but does occur in adults. Another possibility is erythema multiforme, a reaction to viruses and drugs, and there are other (more serious) possibilities, so get him to a dermatologist for a precise diagnosis.
