Can disc herniation at l4-l5 cause s1 nerve pain (pain along side of feet). how?

S1 nerve root: A large l4-5 disc herniation can compress multiple nerves. Most commonly, the L5 nerve root that innervates the front of your shin and top of your foot is affected, the s1 nerve is not yet a nerve root, but can still be compressed within the nerve sac and be affected.

Yes as in up to 15%?: of people, there can be some "cross wiring" of nerves leading to overlapping patterns of sciatic pain. A disc herniation at L4-5 depending on the size of the herniation and its location can affect several different nerve roots from L3 ( a far lateral or extra foraminal disc herniation for example ) down.
