No: Lumpectomy is done usually on the breast to determine and remove suspicious breast masses which occasionally are known to be cancerous ahead of time. It is done under gentle control with a minor pin prick to administer the numbing medicine. Recovery is rapid. The only real discomfort is psychic as the potential diagnoses are scary.

Yes: Like other surgical procedures there is some pain after a lumpectomy. The pain is usually mild to moderate which can be controlled by over the counter pain medications. However, the pain threshold is not the same in every patient. Some patients require a prescription pain medication. Please discuss with your surgeon regarding your pain control needs.
