Fluids, Fenugreek: The best idea for healthy breastfeeding is to stay well hydrated...Lots of fluids! even in the best of times, breast milk volumes can decrease, and there a lots of home remedies. One of the herbs that has been studied recently is fenugreek --- and when purchasing fenugreek, be sure to shop at a large, reliable health food store or pharmacy that has lots of turn-over of its products for freshness.

Helping lactation: The number one trick is to spend as much time as possible with the baby in your arms, even skin-to-skin. Learning baby's early cues of hunger is important because once they are crying, it's hard to latch. Cluster feeding in the evening hours is normal. Get help from a lactation consultant or local la leche league early.

Can help yourself: Lactation or breastfeeding headaches can be caused most commonly by weaning too quickly, exhaustion, dehydration, poor diet, stress, thyroid changes and hormonal changes, estrogen and oxytocin (control of milk release). Try to relax, eat a well balanced diet, and drink plenty of fluids.

What do lactation consultants do?

Dr. Gregg Alexander answered

Help breastfeeding: Lactation consultants are trained to help identify problems with breastfeeding, either mom- or child-related. They can help with technique, latching, treatment of nipple problems, assessing adequacy of feeds and milk production, use of breast pumps (if needed), and are just generally good education and support resources for helping moms and babes get the whole breastfeeding thing rolling!

Many moms can induce lactation simply by latching baby to breast, perhaps with a supplemental nursing system. The baby's latch triggers the hormones to make milk. See a lactation consultant to learn how to do this.
