Seizures: Epillim (sodium valproate) is a pregnancy category d drug for seizures (category x for migraines) . There is evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational studies in humans. Recent studies suggest as many as 50% of babies exposed to the medication may show cognitive disadvantage. Check with your doctor to consider another medication at minimum effective dose.

Valproate syndrome: In studies reported in the 80's and 90's infants exposed to valproate alone during pregnancy had a variety of issues. About a third showed a recognizable pattern of altered facial features, abnormalities in the formation of the heart, and occasional cleft lip or meningomyelocele. Growth and mental deficiencies were also seen occasionally.
