Valproate & Pregnant: This particular anti-seizure medication is well known to cause birth defects especially during the first trimester of the pregnancy. It is my opinion that if you desire to become pregnant, you should discuss with your neurologist how soon before getting pregnant that you should begin an alternate anticonvulsant. Your neurologist and ob/gyn should have a discussion to make sure both are in agreeme.
