Testicular Lumps: What you are checking for is something that feels different from the norm. Generally the lump will be hard compared to "squishy". The best time to check is right after a warm shower or bath, while relaxed. As for appearance, you should be checking and find the lump by feeling it before it is visible. You should check yourself once a month.
