Speech therapist: Many children show resistance to trying new foods as they reach the toddler stage, but most eventually outgrow this. If child gags or vomits when eating foods of certain textures, or appears anxious or fearful of new foods, he may have a feeding disorder.Young children may show an aversion to certain food textures because they lack the oral motor skills necessary to eat those foods. If your son is : phobic about trying new foods & no medical problem exists, he needs a child psychologist to search for a precipitating factor, like having gagged on a new food while anxious about your back surgery. Do not not to give him any negative or positive attention for food refusal, as that reinforces the behavior. Occupational & Speech/Language therapists work together to treat oral aversion.
