What exactly does birth control pills actually do so you can't get pregnant?

Prevent ovulation: The pill suppresses ovulation. When one is on the pill, their body receives a higher than normal amount of estrogen (from the pills), and this acts as a negative feedback signal to stop the body from producing and releasing eggs (ovulation).
