Heavy bleeding not controlled by pills, shots, other hormones, or cooking the lining ('ablation') is a reason for surgery. Concern for cancer because of severely abnormal pap smear or uterus biopsy, or known cancer. Lastly, fallen uterus (prolapse) is another reason.
