A member asked:

Is the whooping cough nearly always fatal for 12 year olds?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Rarely: The highest case fatality rate for whooping cough is known for infants under 6 months of age. With rare exceptions, the preteen will have a significant chronic bronchitis/pneumonia with a cough lasting for 3 months or more. The main problem with the symptomatic 12 yo is their ability to pass it to unvaccinated babies & potentially lead to a fatality.
