Depends on timing: Nuvaring starts releasing hormones immediately after it is placed. However, prevention of pregnancy relies heavily on correct timing of initiation. If you place the NuvaRing on the first day of your menses, you will be fine. At any other point in the cycle, you must use an additional backup birth control method for 7 days.
