Abdominal injury: This can be minimal with no real damage to any organ, up to rupture of the spleen, causing shock and low blood pressure. Knife injuries can puncture major bowel organs, liver and spleen. If there is bruising in the skin of the side, it can be a sign of very severe bleeding that requires immediate surgery.

Internal Injuries: We differentiate abdominal injuries secondary to penetrating trauma (gun shot-, knife wounds) vs. Blunt trauma (car crashes, falls). The former almost-always requires immediate surgery whereas the latter tends to cause injuries to solid organs (liver, spleen, kidney, etc) and may often be treated non-surgically.
