With bacterial pneumonia and congestive heart failure you can cough up blood. If you are forty and have been a 10 to 20 pack-year smoker and cough up blood one or more times, lung cancer is possible and a ct chest should be done and bronchoscopy if there is suggestio.

Hemoptysis.: While there could be some more simple reasons for coughing up blood, we generally like it when blood stays inside the body so when someone is coughing up blood we like to investigate. Do you smoke? If you smoke and are coughing up blood I'd be very concerned about the possibility of cancer. You need some testing - CT scan, bronchoscopy...

Coughing up blood: In general, coughing up blood is a serious problem that should be evaluated. If you are coughing up blood, I recommend you go to your PCP, an Urgent Care, or ER. There are a number of reasons why a person might cough up blood - pneumonia, bronchitis, blood clot, airway trauma, tuberculosis, cancer, or GI bleeding. As you can see, most causes are serious and require evaluating the patient.
