Two main sources: Burping or belching is usually from swallowed air. But, flatulence is from gas produced when bacteria interact with undigested food in the intestines. The latter is both substance-dependent and time-dependent. Increased amount of undigested food (e.g., fiber, lactose in lactase-deficiency) and increased time it takes to eliminate ( slow-transit constipation) can cause increased gas and bloating.
